Dalian 2010 Science & Technology Week Opens

On the morning of May 15, the opening ceremony for the Dalian 2010 Science & Technology Week which was jointly organized by Dalian Municipal Bureau of Science & Technology, Dalian Publicity Department and Dalian Association for Science & Technology was held in the Shahekou middle and primary school students’ science & technology center. Mr. Chen Limin, deputy director of Standing Committee of Dalian Municipal People’s Congress announced the opening of the Week. Mr. Lou Yuhua, vice chairman of Dalian Municipal People’s Political Consultative Conference, and Sha Guohe, academician of Chinese Academy of Science were present at the ceremony.
As a nation wide large campaign, the Science & Technology Week serves as an important carrier for publicizing China’s science & technology development strategies, promoting science & technology advancement and innovation, enhancing the contact between science workers and general public, putting forward the scientific spirits and spreading scientific knowledge. Since the first Dalian Science & Technology Week in 2001, its social influences are gaining momentum day by day, its brand effects are expanding rapidly, and people’s enthusiasm in participation is growing greatly, which plays a positive role in extending the scientific knowledge, raising the citizens’ science quality, and accelerating the construction of an innovation-oriented city. At present, there are 44 recognized science & technology popularization bases above municipal level in Dalian, including six of state level and 15 of provincial level. During the opening ceremony, the municipal leaders have granted tablets for the new bases, and departments concerned donated 10 competition robots for some middle and primary schools.
With the theme of joining in hands in establishing an innovation-based city, this year’s Science & Technology Week lasts from May 15 to May 21. Focusing on publicizing and implementing the scientific outlook on development, science & technology serving the economic development, science & technology benefiting people’s livelihood, protecting eco-environment, and extensive participation of people from all walks of life, Dalian Municipal Bureau of Science & Technology will organize a series of fresh and colorful science popularization activities, such as lectures on science extension, science workers going deep into the enterprises to offer services, and large covered trucks’ science teams to villages and schools, in an attempt to further implement the Law of the People’s Republic of China on Science & Technology Progress, foster a benign environment where the whole society advocate science, learn science and use science, strengthen the independent innovation capabilities, speed up the establishment of an innovation-centered city, and build a wide and solid social foundation.
